We’re dreaming of a green Christmas!

So all of us at Organic Surge want to thank our Facebook followers so much for contributing your suggestions for making our Christmas greener. There were so many brilliant tips that we thought we’d collate them into one easy-to-share list. Reading your feedback and comments really does make it all feel worthwhile for our team. Our founder Alan MacKenzie personally reads every single customer review and loves to hear from you.


Alan set up Organic Surge in 2006 after suffering from eczema and skin sensitivity. He was frustrated that he couldn’t find good-quality, genuinely organic skincare at an affordable price.

So here are our and your ideas for 11 quick and easy ways to make this Christmas an eco one.

1. Save ribbons and string from clothing labels to use to make home-made gift tags.

2. Upcycle old Christmas cards into new cards or gift tags rather than throwing them away.

3. Wrap presents in old newspaper or magazines. The gift guides in the Sunday supplements look fun and festive or newsprint with twine and a sprig of foliage such as rosemary from the garden looks elegant and sophisticated.

4. Use botanical decorations from your garden or foraged from the hedgerow rather than store-bought plastic. Look for pine cones, holly, ivy, mistletoe and fir branches. 6. Freeze leftover food to eat at a later date. Here are 24 healthy recipes from BBC’s Good Food to inspire you to get creative with your Christmas leftovers!

6. Defrost your freezer in the run-up to Christmas. Not only will it work more efficiently but it also means you have space to freeze leftovers.

8. Switch the oven off 10 minutes before your food is ready to make the most of the residual heat (it will still keep its temperature).

9. Put a lid on your pan to keep the heat in so you use less gas or electricity to maintain the right temperature – and always choose the right-size burner or ring for your pan.

10. When shopping for Christmas food buy local and seasonal produce and choose organic if you can.
