We’re dreaming of a green Christmas!

So all of us at Organic Surge want to thank our Facebook followers so much for contributing your suggestions for making our Christmas greener. There were so many brilliant tips that we thought we’d collate them into one easy-to-share list. Reading your feedback and comments really does make it all feel worthwhile for our team. Our founder Alan MacKenzie personally reads every single customer review and loves to hear from you.

Alan set up Organic Surge in 2006 after suffering from eczema and skin sensitivity. He was frustrated that he couldn’t find good-quality, genuinely organic skincare at an affordable price.

Over the past decade we have remained a small team and we are proud still to be based in Scotland and to have retained our independence. Making the best products we possibly can – products that are good for your skin as well as for the environment – is the heart and soul of what we do.

So here are our and your ideas for 11 quick and easy ways to make this Christmas an eco one.

1. Save ribbons and string from clothing labels to use to make home-made gift tags.

2. Upcycle old Christmas cards into new cards or gift tags rather than throwing them away.

3. Wrap presents in old newspaper or magazines. The gift guides in the Sunday supplements look fun and festive or newsprint with twine and a sprig of foliage such as rosemary from the garden looks elegant and sophisticated.

4. Use botanical decorations from your garden or foraged from the hedgerow rather than store-bought plastic. Look for pine cones, holly, ivy, mistletoe and fir branches. Herbs such as eucalyptus and rosemary also work a treat. We love this guide from the Seeds & Stitches blog about how to make a free and chic herbal Christmas wreath.

5. Choose a living tree than you can plant in your garden and re-use each year. The RHS have some simple guidelines for caring for your tree here https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=374

6. Freeze leftover food to eat at a later date. Here are 24 healthy recipes from BBC’s Good Food to inspire you to get creative with your Christmas leftovers!

6. Defrost your freezer in the run-up to Christmas. Not only will it work more efficiently but it also means you have space to freeze leftovers.

8. Switch the oven off 10 minutes before your food is ready to make the most of the residual heat (it will still keep its temperature).

9. Put a lid on your pan to keep the heat in so you use less gas or electricity to maintain the right temperature – and always choose the right-size burner or ring for your pan.

10. When shopping for Christmas food buy local and seasonal produce and choose organic if you can. You can search for your nearest organic Christmas market on the Soil Association's website https://www.soilassociation.org/organic-living/buy-organic/the-christmas-collective/find-try-and-buy/the-organic-christmas-market/

11. Discover our eco bundles. Buy a pack of six of any of our products and we give you one of the six free as an eco reward. Buying in bulk helps reduce the carbon footprint and the amount of packaging needed. Share your bundle with friends, family and guests as gifts. Daddy, daddy cool!

Father’s day is fast approaching (just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past month) and I’ve been thinking about which of our products our Daddies would like to open up on Sunday morning, along with breakfast in bed of course!

While we appreciate that most of our 1 million fans are more ‘pink’ than ‘blue’, we also appreciate that a lot of men DO care about what they slather on their skin, and Organic Surge does have its fair share of male enthusiasts, and here's what our beloved male customers have to say about our shower gel range:

"What a blast. This'll wake you up, but in a nice way. I'm going back for more and have never showered so much! "  Steven, a fan of our Citrus Mint shower gel.

"I can’t believe how long the freshness lasts and that a shower gel is making all of that happen!" Andrew, a fan of our Super fresh shower gel.

"So happy with this product. Will keep buying it from you!" Jamie
"This will wake you up from the deepest daze. It lathers up really well and cuts through acres of dirt at a stroke".  Steven G
"This is such a wonderful shower gel. I will purchase again soon." James

All fans of our Ocean Fresh shower gel!

But it’s not just shower gel that the guys like (for some of them like to look rough, tough and smell nasty). Men have sensitive skin too, and if they are going a little thin on top (sorry Dad) then there’s no shame in giving them a little extra boost. Try buying him the Volume Boost Shampoo and Volume Boost Conditioner (half price this week!) and watch the delight on his face as hair follicles perk up.

And of course, we couldn’t finish without asking our leading expert at Organic Surge what HIS favourite product was. Over to you Alan, founder and creator of Organic Surge:

"I've got really tricky skin so I've developed a new routine for myself...firstly I use the Hot cloth cleanser to cleanse my beard area and that softens my beard well. I thought for fun I'd try shaving with the Hot cloth cleanser and it worked a dream so I shave with it and then use a hot wet towel after to remove any residual cream and then I complete it with the replenishing facial oil. A ten out of ten routine for me...and here's an extra tip..if I haven't shaved for a few days I use the Hot cloth cleanser and then a tiny bit of facial oil with the Hot cloth cleanser as I shave! I also use the rose cream on all non shaving days..I really like it because it's non greasy yet my skin feels supple with it (well as supple as an old man's skin can be)."

So there you have it. Never be stuck for ideas again! And don’t forget, there’s still time to get 20% off all ‘gifts for him’ this father’s day.

Britain in Bloom

Now I’m no Charlie Dimmock, but even I couldn’t help but be amazed by all the awe-inspiring exhibitions at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. Normally I have trouble keeping weeds alive, but with a sunny Bank Holiday weekend forecast, I have made it my mission to transform my garden from a jungle in to a haven.

You couldn’t really avoid The Chelsea Flower Show this week if you tried. Not that you’d want to, with its immaculate show gardens, manicured lawns and highly imaginative displays there was plenty to inspire even the most novice of gardeners. Whetman Pinks even managed to create a cocktail glass of Dianthus. Cocktails and flowers, what’s not to love about that? Perhaps I won’t aim quite that high, and although my knowledge on plants is fairly limited, the one thing I do know about is how to look after my skin properly after a hard day wrestling a garden folk.

Firstly, the Organic Surge Gardeners Hand Cream is not just your run-of-the-mill hand cream. It’s made with a quick drying formula, so that you don’t have to have wet hands when you put on your gardening gloves. As well as a moisturiser, it also acts as an emollient, so it has a protective barrier for when you are working outside. Not only that, but the smell is just incredible, Lime Basil and Rosemary are a wonderful combination.

When you have finished a hard day in the garden and the lure of a G&T is just too overwhelming, I would recommend that you rinse off the majority of the dirt and soil with the Organic Surge Lavender Meadow Hand Wash. This has a gentle but effective formula, and is even kind to my eczema prone hands. Then I would apply the Gardeners Hand Scrub. This really works wonders for hard working hands, when the mud and earth has worked its way into the creases of your hands. The gentle scrubbing action of natural olive seed helps buff away ingrained dirt and roughened skin, while the enriched blend of plant extracts and moisturising shea butter will return your hands back to their former soft selves. Not only that, but they will be clean clean clean!

But please don’t take my word for it. We’ve created a special edition bundle (with a special discount price!) for any of those intrepid gardeners who are, like me, planning on spending their bank holiday in their wellies. It even includes the Lavender Meadow Foaming Bath, so that you can relax after your hard slog in the garden and reward yourself with a G&T, or a nice flowery cocktail....

Thank you to Whetman Pinks for the images
